Lonelygirl15 producer to launch Scary City this week - As lonelygirl15 proved, the new age of storytelling is upon us, and according to a recent article, a web-based endeavor by one of its key production staff is going to be a very big deal. Earlier last week, Unfiction forums member jlr1001 posted a link to an article at ThugLifeArmy about Scary City, which will include two separate but interrelated editions of the series running in the US and Japan. The international effort doesn't stop there, as there may be possible expansion into Korea, Israel, the UK, France, and Thailand. The article points out the extravagant cost of the Scary City ...

Making Alternate Reality Games Accessible - It's been a while since I took a look at American Vampire League. But after learning that the alternate reality game was a promotion for HBO's new series True Blood (premiering September 7th at 9pm), I stopped following the campaign for a while. Sure, I read about io9 receiving a vial of Tru Blood before they grew to dislike ARGs. And I enjoyed reading Scott S...

UPDATE: There's gold in them thar' real world locations - While it's not quite a return to the gold rush days of yore, the alternate reality game for Velvet Assassin, dubbed Violette's Dream by the players, involves much more than just fake Nazi gold bars. In fact, much to the delight of Dee Cook (addlepated) and Russel_k at the Unfiction forums, there are authentic gold bars ready to be found in the real world! According to a press release sent to us, while these gold bars a...

ARGFest 2008 in Review: Long Live Unfiction (Sean Stacey Learns to Whistle) - This article is the fifth in a series, providing summaries of the panel presentations at ARGFest-o-Con 2008 in Boston In 2004, Sean Stacey was traveling through France with a friend. Walking along the Champs Elysees, he encountered a man on the street making the most incredible whistling sounds he ever heard. For the next few days, Sean diligently practiced his whistle, contorting his face in new and unfamiliar ways, attempting to duplicate the sound that fascinated him so much. Finally, his friend explained to him that the man on the street was selling bird whistles. He didn't say anything before because, "well, you were getting pretty good." Unfiction is kind of like that. The mor...

Mailbox: Shadowbox Inn - In the mail today was a plain brown box, light in weight but heavy in mystery. Inside was a postcard featuring the URL shadowboxinn.googlepages.com on one side, and the numbers '808080808' on the back. Along for the ride was a pool ball, number 11, which looks fairly ordinary. A quick Google search turns up ...

The quick and dirty: New ARGs pop up, like, everywhere! - Don't mind us -- we're just catching up on the latest round of alternate reality game launches, via the ARGNet tipline/inbox/mailbox. Here is what we know of, in no particular order: (1) Eklipse Global: We first heard about this game through the LiveJournal blog of staffer Geoff May, and were reminded again of its existence when we picked up our post-ARGFest mail. After sitting at the post office since the 18th of July, the USPS Priority Mail envelope was opened to reveal a letter, and a mysterious message: IF YOU HEAR THE HUM IS TOO LATE!! ...

Tying up loose ends in fairyland - Not only was it a tight box office for Hellboy II, releasing just one week before Batman: The Dark Knight, but the alternate reality game running in its shadow was also competing against TDK's massive viral campaign. As a result, the game, which was a joint venture between Hellboy II director Guillermo del Toro and Double-20, found itself flying in under the radar for the most part. However, the community following it very much enjoyed it, myself included. There is, however, still one minor piece of content that never got a chance to see the light of day, which is revealed at the end of this article. For those unfamiliar with Double-20, they were part...

ARGFest 2008 in Review: ARG International (Lost in Translation) - This article is the fourth in a series, providing summaries of the panel presentations at ARGFest-o-Con 2008 in Boston The third panel discussion featured Brian Clark of GMD Studios as moderator, Patrick Moeller (ARGReporter, vm-people GmbH), Alexander Serrano (vm-people GmbH), and Genevieve Cardin (Baroblik communication et multimedia). The panel discussed the blossoming ARG market in countries that have yet to enjoy the wonders of Fried Oreos. The discussion started with a brief history of the alternate gaming market in Germany, from its humble beginnings as a student project about the World Cup to the present day, with three grassroots projects running concurrently, and commercial AR...

ARGFest 2008 in Review: The Live Events (Stealing Sleep an Hour at a Time) - There were so many game launches, puzzles, and events at ARGFest this year, it's a wonder anyone had any time to attend any of the panels. What follows is a brief summary of some of the events that robbed this columnist of his much-needed beauty sleep. Alpha Agency The first game launch of the night was a subtle one. Upon arriving at the Cocktail Party at 7pm, Lewis Murphy handed me his business card. He even went through the trouble of writing my name on the card before handing it over. Upon closer inspection, there was a symbol on the back of the card. Sixteen other specially marked business cards were handed out over the next few hours. Thanks to some quick footwork by Ma...

UPDATE: Dharma Wants You, but not quite yet - As soon as the Octagon Global Recruiting ad flashed across the television screen during the final commercial break of the season four finale of Lost, fans were on their computers, headed towards the advertised web site. It wasn't more than a few moments before the world figured out that something big was bound to happen at Comic-Con 2008, which is happening right now in San Diego. True to their word, the Dharma Initiative is actively recruiting new members for its global corporation, and quite a few lucky attendees have had the chance to take the test to become part of the Dharma ...

ARGFest 2008 in Review: Rules of Engagement with Steve Peters (Brunettes with Glasses are Hot) - This article is the third in a series, providing summaries of the presentations at ARGFest-o-Con 2008 in Boston Steve Peters left ARGNet a few years back, but he still sticks around. Supposedly, he works for some company named 42 Entertainment that sponsored ARGFest 2008 and purchased tickets to The Dark Knight for attendees. In this Showcase Presentation, Steve Peters explained how to deal with Alternate Reality Gaming audiences using the Microsoft Vista-sponsored ARG Vanishing Point as an example. According to Peters, there are Five F's of Fantasticness necessary for every alternate reality game: Find, Focus, Fun, Freedom, and Fear. The first st...

ARGNet is SciFi's Site of the Week! - As television stations go, we're big fans of Sci Fi, and not just because they named us the Site of the Week earlier today. With original programming like Battlestar Galactica (the best show on television), the 4400 (which had an ARG of it's own) and the Stargate series, it's hard not to be a fan of the network. Thanks to Ken Newquist at Sci Fi for recognizing our efforts here at ARGNet, and as we told him in an email a few minutes ago, it comes at a great time for us, as we have a series of articles coming this week on ARGFest-o-Con 2008, which officially wra...
