Steppenwolf Theatre
|
Steppenwolf Theatre Company was founded in 1974 and became a professional
theatre in 1976. Established with a vision for ensemble production
and theatrical risk, Steppenwolf Theatre stays true to this early
vision today. Nationally acclaimed and with a 25,000 strong membership
in Chicago, Steppenwolf Theatre is one of the city's premiere arts
establishments.
Performances are produced for the Mainstage, Studio Theatre and
Garage at Steppenwolf, all located at their theater on North Halsted
Street at North Avenue. The programming on the 515-seat Mainstage
is selected by the ensemble and includes classic works among new
pieces.
Productions at the Studio Theatre are more experimental in nature,
with performances in the 60-seat Garage at Steppenwolf showcasing
new writing talent and smaller scale productions. Both venues embrace
the artistic values that have defined Steppenwolf Theatre for nearly
30 years.
The Steppenwolf Theatre production of The Grapes of Wrath, earned
the company two Tony Awards for Best Play and Best Director, whilst
the Song of Jacob Zulu, featuring the South African singers Ladysmith
Black Mambazo, received five Tony nominations.
